Sooner or later when you upgrade your system you would see something like: The following packages have been kept back: empathy mplayer mysql-server mysql-server5.0 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded.

This doesn’t really impose a big problem if its your laptop. Why it happens? Well usually because the “newer” versions of those packages has unsatisfied dependencies or they need to remove something already install on your system, so they pass the ball to your court and decide whether to remove and upgrade or not.
